Application

A student intern MUST be receiving academic credit from, or fulfilling an academic requirement for an accredited educational institution. In most instances, student interns are upper division majors or minors in the areas of biological science, horticulture, pre-veterinary medicine, education, conservation biology or related disciplines.

Internships are unpaid and are 10 to 14 weeks in length and 30 to 40 hours per week.

Applications MUST Include:

  • Completed application form
  • Cover Letter including a paragraph explaining why you are interested in an internship at the Minnesota Zoo;
  • Resume;
  • Official Transcripts; and,
  • Letter of recommendation from an advisor or supervisor
Please note: Incomplete application packets will not be considered.

All application materials must be received by the following deadlines unless otherwise noted in the internship descriptions.

Veterinary Technician Internship

The Animal Health department is responsible for the care and management of all new animals coming into the Zoo. As an intern you may be working with mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates on any given day.

Spring/Summer Internship: Vet Tech Intern

Application deadline is February 1st. See Application Procedure for complete application instructions. Two letters of recommendation are required for the Vet Tech Internship Application Packet.

Internship runs April-August for a minimum of an 8 week period within those months. Start and end dates are flexible. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

The student will work with a team of 2 certified Veterinary Technicians and 3 Veterinarians, along with any number of animal care staff. The student will get hands on experience working with a variety of species. Medical procedures will be performed indoors and outdoors. Candidates should be willing to work in inclimate weather conditions. It is recommended that candidates have some previous animal care and/or veterinary assistant experience prior to this internship. This internship is only for students currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary technician program. Candidates should be goal orientated towards working in the zoological veterinary field.
