Minnesota Zoo Launches Official "Fish Smart" Program
Apple Valley, MINN – October 18, 2011 – October is National Seafood Month, and the Minnesota Zoo is celebrating with the official launch of its sustainable “Fish Smart” program today. The Zoo is proud to partner with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, the Shedd Aquarium’s Right Bite program, and top Twin Cities restaurants committed to the cause. The Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program is designed to raise public awareness of and demand for
sustainable seafood in a variety of ways including online, outreach, and onsite events. Top Twin Cities
restaurants that have joined the Zoo as launch partners by committing to serving only sustainably caught “The mission of the Minnesota Zoo is to connect people, animals and the natural world,” said Minnesota Zoo Director/CEO Lee Ehmke. “Fish Smart supports this mission by raising public awareness and demand for sustainable seafood. The Minnesota Zoo believes that informed consumers can create positive change for the ocean and the wildlife that lives there.” Sustainable seafood is defined as seafood, either wild caught or farm-raised, that cannot only sustain current populations but thrive over the long term while not damaging the environment. The Minnesota Zoo is committed to supporting sustainable seafood and freshwater choices to help protect our environment by increasing the availability of sustainable seafood in the Twin Cities area and awareness of sustainable seafood issues throughout Minnesota.
